Abstract
131,662. Domestic Engineering Co., (Assignees of Kettering, C. F.). July 17, 1917, [Convention date]. Valves are cooled by the vaporization of mercury in the stem. Fig. 2 shows a beat valve having a hollow stem, and a head 25 containing a small quantity of mercury. Mercury vapour condenses in the upper part of the stem, upon which may be pro. vided cooling-fins 22. Mercury amalgam is coated on the inside of the stem. The head of the valve is preferably constructed of tungsten steel and the stem of nickel steel. To prevent oxidation, the outer surfaces of the valves are heated in a reducing-atmosphere with a. mixture containing finelydivided aluminium.
