Abstract

1316607 Continuous casting TECHNICON INSTRUMENTS CORP 21 May 1970 24621/70 Heading B3F Molten sheel or other metal enters a cooled closed-end mould 20 which is withdrawn relatively from the source of metal, e.g. a tundish 12, so that a solidified shell 34, Fig. 2, of a continuous casting 32 is formed, further metal flowing through the shell towards the mould during casting of the solid strand. The copper mould 20 is withdrawn on a carriage 22 which also bears an oscillator 24 for reciprocating the mould so that withdrawal may be intermittent to facilitate remelting of a membranous portion (36) of shell which forms against the end wall 49. The mould 20 may be spring-mounted so as to be jerked after any momentary seizure. A starter tube 17 secured to a nozzle 16 of the tundish may be preheated to lessen solidification therein and may have grooves 19, holes or projections or be provided with chill scrap to aid adherence of the shell 34. For a canted casting, enabling the escape of gases from rimmed steel, the nozzle 16 and tube 17 may be inclined or there may be an inclined starter tube (78) spaced from a tundish spout and with insulation (79) to prevent internal solidification and the upper end of the casting may be heated. As the shell 32 is exposed it is cooled by spray nozzles 43 and carried by supports 27 which are raised for the purpose. Cooling water supplies to compartments 45, 46, 48 in the mould wall may be varied by valves 53-55. The end wall of the mould may be concave or have an aperture for lubricant. The mould cavity may taper towards the open end.
