Abstract

1351856 Continuous casting TECHNICON INSTRUMENTS CORP 19 April 1971 [13 April 1970] 26266/71 Heading B3F A tubular shell 17 of metal is continuously cast by moving apart a source of molten metal, such as a tundish 12, and a cooled, closed-end mould 14 (e.g. in the manner described in Specification 1,316,607 and utilizing a hollow starter bar 13 fixed to the tundish outlet), molten metal flowing towards the mould through the shell during casting and, after termination of the flow from the source, continuing to flow into the mould to form an additional length of shell. A second molten metal 18 is poured from a ladle 20, as shown, by way of the tundish 12 when pouring of the shell metal is stopped and an intermixed area 21 is formed between the melts. As the relative movement between tundish and mould progresses, the last of the first metal 11 continues to flow through the shell 17 to the mould 14 and is substantially all solidified to complete the shell. Then when the area 21 reaches the closed end of the mould 14, the second metal 18 may progressively solidify in the shell so that a composite billet or slab results, having a core of the second metal. Alternatively, a hollow core may be formed, so that a composite tube results, by separating the tundish 12 and mould 14 along an inclined path with the mould lowermost. as indicated in Fig. 8 of Specification 1,316,607, increasing the cooling by spray-nozzles 19 and continuing the separation of the mould and tundish after the tundish is free of the second metal or its outflow is otherwise stopped. The second metal 18 may be provided by treatment (killing by Al or Si) of part of the first metal 11 (rimming steel) which remains in a ladle after sufficient to form the shell has been poured. A core of carbon steel may be solidified in a stainless steel shell, or vice versa. A layer of alloy may be formed between the shell and core. Cu, Al, Al alloy or bronze cores may be cast in carbon or stainless steel shells and combinations of non-ferrous metals may be cast. The core may have the higher melting point.
