Abstract

1315599 Land and road rollers SOUTH AFRICAN INVENTIONS DEVELOPMENT CORP 19 April 1971 [5 Feb 1970] 21088/71 Heading A1B [Also in Divisions B7 and F2] A motor driven or towed impact roller has pivotally mounted ground contacting peripheral lobes whose angular position may be varied to alter the cross-sectional profile of the roller and thus vary the lift of the centre of gravity when in use. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, the lobes 14 are mounted at 16 on a core and are locked and displaced by hydraulic rams 13, 15 or a screw jack (Fig. 3, not shown) or spring mechanism (not shown); by synchronising the actuation of the rams they may be used to drive the roller. The lobes may be interlinked so as to be adjustable by means of only one ram. In another embodiment, Fig. 9, the roller axle carries an inflatable tyre 52 and the lobes are mounted between side plates 56, the tyre pressure determining the degree of deformity of the profile. In each embodiment the profile may be varied during use and may be altered to circular form when no impact is required.
