Abstract

1315539 Centrifugal separators G PETERSEN 3 July 1970 [5 July 1969 2 April 1970] 32394/70 Headings B1R and B2P Apparatus for treating suspensions of solid or liquid phase material in a gaseous phase to agglomerate and/or separate the solid or liquid phase material and/or to absorb the gaseous phase in a liquid absorbent comprises a housing, an inlet for feeding to the housing the suspension to be treated, an impeller rotatably mounted in the housing for accelerating the suspension by centrifugal force towards the periphery of the housing, an outlet for withdrawal of gaseous phase material from the periphery of the housing and an outlet from the housing for solid or liquid phase material deposited against the inside wall of the housing by the centrifugal force. The impeller comprises a pair of disc-shaped plates spaced apart from, and parallel with, one another and defining therebetween an impeller space in open communication around its periphery with the interior of the housing. Accelerator vanes are positioned between the plates and extend radially of the impeller space a distance equal to from 10-40% of the radius of the said plates. The inlet -feeds incoming suspension centrally of the impeller space along the axis of rotation of the impeller and has a nozzle therein for introducing a liquid into the incoming suspension before feeding to the impeller space. In Figs. 1 and 2, a centrifuge rotor comprising a number of chambers 2 delimited by disc-like boundary walls 3 and radial partition walls 4 is mounted on a drive shaft 1 for rotation in a helical housing 7 which is provided with a central inlet 8 for gas containing impurities and an outlet 6 for cleaned gas. Liquid is injected into the entering gas through one or more nozzles 10. Accelerator vanes 17, which may be straight and radial, as shown, or inclined forwardly or rearwardly relative to the direction of rotation of the rotor, or which may be curved rearwardly or forwardly, Fig. 3 (not shown), are provided at the inner portion of the chambers 2 and serve to bring the gas and the injected liquid to the same peripheral velocity as that of the chambers 2. In the chambers the liquid droplets and the impurities are subjected to centrifugal acceleration which leads to their agglomeration and precipitation whereby they are deposited in the housing 7 and discharged through a drain 21. In Fig. 4, the rotor has a single chamber with curved partition walls 4, accelerator vanes 17, 12, the vanes 12 having the effect of causing the gas to flow more evenly and without excessive eddying through the chamber 2 and thence into the surrounding helical housing. Other forms of single-chamber rotors are described, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown). In Fig. 7, the chambers 2, which may be delimited by curved partition walls and which may have curved vanes at their inner and outer peripheries, Fig. 8 (not shown), are provided with wires or filaments 19 to facilitate cleaning of the gases. Instead of the wires or filaments, cylindrical, perforated or sieve-like elements are fitted concentrically in the chambers 2, Fig. 9 (not shown). In a further modification, Fig. 10, the chambers 2 are filled with wires or filaments 19 and the gases enter a central inlet 6 tangentially. Accelerator vanes are provided at 17. To further promote rotation of the gases drive blades may be provided at the inner gas inlet into the rotor or, as shown at 16, at the outlet therefrom.
