Abstract

1315391 Radiographic contrast medium RIKAGAKU KENKYUSHO 19 June 1970 [20 June 1969 (2) 15 Nov 1969 13 May 1970] 30009/70 Heading A5B A radiographic contrast medium comprises (a) 10-65% by weight of a contrast agent and (b) a liquid carrier including a dispersing agent, the contrast agent comprising a soft magnetic ferrite in particles which are no greater than 0.2Á in diameter and an oxide of Ba, Bi, W, Zr, Sn, Ta, Y or a lanthanide, including La itself but excluding Pm. The ferrite may be produced by coprecipitation from an aqueous solution of salts of the metals of which it is composed or by firing a mixture of oxides or carbonates of those metals. The ferrite may be treated with acid to render it less soluble in gastric juices. Ferrites specified include: Fe, Mn, Ni, Cu, Co, Zn, Cu-Zn, Mg, Ni-Zn, Mn-Zn and Fe-Zn ferrites, Fe 3 O 4 , and γ-Fe 2 O 3 . Oxides specified include: BaO (added as BaCO 3 ), Bi 2 O 3 , Ce 2 O 3 , WO 3 , ZrO 2 , SnO 2 , Ta 2 O 5 , Y 2 O 3 , La 2 O 3 , Pr 2 O 3 , Nd 2 O 3 , Sm 2 O 3 , Eu 2 O 3 , Gd 2 O 3 , Tb 2 O 3 , Dy 2 O 3 , Ho 2 O 3 and Yb 2 O 3 . The dispersing agent may be starch, sodium alginate or polyvinyl alcohol. Other ingredients specified include water, gum tragacanth and peppermint oil.
