Abstract
1315206 Bolt fastenings M H RUMBLE 4 May 1971 [5 May 1970] 21528/70 Addition to 1172476 Heading E2A A bolt mechanism for securing an openable member 102 to a stationary structure 106, comprises an elongate bolt 104 having a longitudinally-extending undercut groove 105 in one face thereof, a pair of blocks 101, 107 each having a transverse cross-section complementary to that of the groove and arranged to be secured respectively to the openable member and to said stationary structure and spaced apart longitudinally of the bolt, whereby the bolt is slidably-mounted on the block 101 and is movable between a securing position in which in use the bolt is also engaged with the block 107 and thereby bridges and is retained by both blocks and a releasing position in which the bolt is disengaged from the block 107, and stop means 115 preventing longitudinal sliding movement of the bolt beyond its securing and releasing positions, the groove being in the rear face of the bolt, that is the face thereof which in use is adjacent the openable member and the bolt having end portions of its front and side faces which in use, with the openable member closed, are adjacent said other block extending longitudinally beyond the groove in the bolt, whereby when the bolt is in its releasing position and the openable member is closed, said end portions will shroud said other block without being retained thereby, the other end of the bolt, then being disposed beyond the end of said one block remote from the other block by a distance at least equal to the distance of travel of the bolt between its securing and releasing positions, whereby when the openable member is closed both blocks will be shrouded by the bolt whichever position it is in. In the construction shown, the block 107 has a body and a head both of cylindrical shape, the head being of greater diameter than the body and the blocks being of a size such that in the fastening position of the bolt it is disposed in the undercut groove; the block 107 is secured in position by a screw 109 and its head is eccentric to the axis of the body whereby on rotating the block on the screw the block can in use be aligned with the undercut groove. The block 101 may be made of a resilient plastics material and the central portion of .the block is formed by thin walls 120 each of which has a protuberances 121 engaging the side walls of the larger part of the undercut groove the protuberances providing frictional resistance to the sliding of the bolt. The end portion of the bolt which covers the block 107 when the member 102 is in the closed position is U- shaped in cross section and extends from the undercut groove. The stop 115 is secured by a screw 116 to an extension 117 of the block 101 beyond its end face 113; the bolt is provided with a transverse bar 112 which moves with the bolt and, in the releasing position of the bolt, engages the end face 113 of the block 101 and, in the bolting position of the bolt, engages a shoulder 114 of the stop 115.
