Abstract

903,728. Making fastenings. SMITH & DAVIS Ltd. Sept. 17, 1959 [Sept. 17, 1958], No. 29694/58. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XXV] A bolt mechanism comprises a body part 10 having a bore 16 formed therein and extending from one end of the body part to the other end thereof, the body part having a rear face adapted to be applied against a member to which the body part is to be attached, the body part being formed with two slots 21 disposed transversely relative to the longitudinal axis of the bore and at positions spaced along the axis and extending from one side of the body part to the other and from the front face to the rear face to form platforms 22 at the rear of the slots, the platforms being forced with holes 23 extending therethrough to receive fixing elements, the body part being formed with a slot 24 parallel with said axis extending through the front wall of the body part and forming with the transverse slots a slot of H-shape; a bolt 18 mounted in the bore so as to be slidable longitudinally and rotatable therein and a handle 28 screwed to the bolt extending transversely and capable of engaging the H-shaped slot to enable the bolt to be shot and rotated and when in those positions to be rotated to enable the handle to engage one of the transverse slots in a position out of alignment with the longitudinal slot, whereby the bolt is retained in its required longitudinal position. The bolt engages a bore in a keep-part in the shot position, this having a single transverse slot providing a single platform with a hole 32. Both the keep part and the body part are made from an extruded metal or other bar, the transverse slots 21 of the body part being machined from the front 14 of the body part to a depth slightly below the lower wall of the bore 16. The holes 23 are bored in each platform. Also machined, is the longitudinal slot 24. The handle 28 is screwed into position on the bolt. The longitudinal slot allows the handle to be moved from one transverse slot to the other and rotation of the bolt in the transverse slot prevents its movement. Both the keep part and body part are formed with longitudinal ribs 20 to prevent movement of the part when in position on a door or the like. To prevent movement of the bolt when used in a vertical position, a blade spring can be provided which is positioned between the body part and the bolt. In an alternative construction each transverse slot 21 is provided with gaps which engage the bolt handle.
