Abstract

1314855 Lubricants MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd 28 May 1971 [17 June 1970] 29291/70 Heading C5F [Also in Division C3] Lubricating oil compositions comprise as viscosity index improvers copolymers containing on a molar basis (1) 85 to 94% ethylene, (2) 15 to 2% of a vinyl ester of a long chain carboxylic acid having 8 to 30 carbon atoms and (3) 10 to 0% vinyl acetate. The lubricating oil may be a paraffinic or naphthenic mineral oil, or a synthetic oil, and may contain conventional additives such as phenols, arylamines, sulphurized phenols or hydrocarbons, zinc dinonyl dithiophosphate, alkali or alkaline earth metal petroleum or alkylbenzene sulphonates, tricresyl phosphate, oxamide derivatives, alkenyl succinimides, phosphosulphurized hydrocarbons and alkyl salicylic acids and salts thereof. Examples describe compositions of paraffinic oils, zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate, basic calcium alkylbenzene sulphonate, alkenyl succinimide dispersant, a polymethacrylate pour point depressant and copolymers of ethylene and vinyl acetate with (1) vinyl isostearate and (2 and 3) vinyl oleate.
