Abstract
1314053 Olefin polymerization MONTECATINI EDISON SpA 29 July 1970 [31 July 1969] 36622/70 Heading C3P Olefins are polymerized by contact with a catalyst comprising (A) a hydride or organometallic compound of a Group I-III metal; and (B) the product prepared by contacting a titanium compound with a carrier comprising an anhydrous manganese halide in an active form or under conditions such that activation occurs. The component (B) may be prepared (a) by contacting a titanium compound with an activated anhydrous manganese halide obtained by dissolving an anhydrous manganese halide in an organic solvent and rapidly evaporating the solvent under reduced pressure and above 100 C.; (b) by grinding together a titanium compound and an activated support; (c) by treating an inactive anhydrous manganese halide with a liquid titanium compound or a solution of a titanium compound in an organic solvent under conditions such that the titanium compound becomes anchored on to the carrier; or (d) by contacting an anhydrous manganese halide with an excess of TiCl 4 at the boiling point and removing the excess. The examples, all of which relate to the polymerization of ethylene, illustrate the following catalysts: (A) Ai(iC 4 H 9 ) 3 with Ti[N(C 2 H 5 ) 2 ]Cl 3 ; Ti[OC 3 H 7 n]Cl 3 ; Ti[OCOC 6 H 5 ]Cl 3 ; Ti[OCOCH 3 ]Cl 3 ; 3TiCl 3 .AlCl 3 ; Cl 3 TiSO 3 -C 6 H 4 CH 3 ; Ti 2 [OiC 3 H 7 ] 3 Cl 3 ; TiCl 4 ; [N(CH 3 ) 4 ]Ti 2 Cl 9 or (C 5 H 5 NH) 3 TiCl 3 supported on MnCl 2 ; or Ti[N(C 2 H 5 ) 2 ]Cl 3 supported on MnBr 2 ; (B) Ti[N(C 2 H 5 ) 4 ]Cl 3 supported on MnCl 2 with AlH(iC 4 H 9 ) 2 or Al(C 2 H 5 ) 3 .
