Abstract

1313471 Chance apparatus W ROBSON 25 Sept 1971 44781/71 Heading A6H A chance apparatus for selecting a pair of letters of the alphabet and intended for use on a petrol station forecourt includes a pair of cycle wheels having soldered around their rims brass shims 1. Each shim (1) is marked with the 26 letters of the alphabet. The wheels are each provided with a 26-tooth gear wheel (2) fixed fast to their hubs and are mounted on free-wheeling units (3), each free-wheeling unit (3) being provided with an actuating member (4) linked to a rotary drive shaft (A) by a pivoting link (8A9) and a drive pin (7). The shaft (A) is rotated by hand, the extent of rotation being limited by offset pins (C) and an interposed bar (B), to set the wheels spinning. After spinning the shaft (A) is returned to its original position by springs (not shown) and the wheels are braked by a device comprising a braking pin (8) attached by a member (6) to the shaft A. The pin (8) seats against the gear wheel (2) having 26 teeth thereby to bring the wheels to rest in one of 26 positions. The selected letters are visible through peep holes cut in a plastics shield (O).
