Abstract

1312998 Paper making CENTRE TECHNIQUE DE L'INDUSTRIE DES PAPIERS CARTONS ET CELLULOSES 15 Sept 1970 [18 Sept 1969] 44001/70 Heading D2A A sheet or web is formed by bringing a liquid containing elongate particles into contact with a travelling band by overflow of the liquid from a container, and imparting to the particles in the liquid adjacent the band a velocity having a component generally parallel to the surface of the band and perpendicular to the direction of movement of the band whereby the particles are orientated obliquely relative to said direction of movement. The band 4 may be of fine-mesh metal cloth and extends over driven rollers 5. It may be other than vertical as shown. The container 6 is continuously supplied with pulp by a pump 9 and the liquid in the container is rotated by a bladed rotary agitator 10, the speed of which can be varied. The liquid overflows through a slot 17 having a doctor seal 18, e.g. of plastics material. Liquid passes through the band into a chamber 22 which may be subject to suction. In a second embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), two webs or sheets are formed on bands passing on either side of the container, the bands being curved round the cylindrical body of the container and being surrounded by an annular chamber to which liquid passes through the bands. After passing the container, the bands resume their flat shape and are passed round guide rollers whereby one of the formed webs or sheets is disposed on the other, the particles in one web or sheet being orientated in a different direction to those in the other, Fig. 5 (not shown). More than two webs or sheets may be formed simultaneously. In a modification the pulp is supplied tangentially to the container whereby the agitator 10 may be omitted.
