1312975 Chromium complexes of azomethine dyes POLAROID CORP 29 May 1970 [4 June 1969 (2)] 26054/70 Headings C4P [Also in Division G2] The invention comprises 1 : 1 chromium azomethine complexes of the formulµ wherein A is phenyl or naphthyl, B is phenyl, naphthyl or a heterooyclic radical and the O atoms linked to A and B are ortho to -CH = N-, X represents the atoms necessary to complete an aliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic ring, R is alkyl, fluoroalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, phenyl, phenylamino or a silver halide developing substituent, R<SP>1</SP> is alkyl, fluoroalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, phenyl or phenylamino, R<SP>2</SP> is H, C 1 -C 6 alkyl, phenyl or a silver halide developing substituent and R<SP>3</SP> is C 1 -C 6 alkyl, hydroxyl, hydrogen or a dihydroxyphenyl silver halide developing substituent, provided that when X completes a ring R<SP>3</SP> cannot be hydroxyl and provided further that the dye contains at least one silver halide developing substituent. They are prepared by reacting the corresponding non-complexed azomethine dye with a chromic salt, e.g. acetate or chloride and with a ligand, one or both of the azomethine dye and ligand containing a silver halide developing substituent. Ligands containing protected hydroxy groups may be used and the hydroxy group reformed after complexing by mineral acid hydrolysis. The Specification also describes the preparation of azomethine dyes of the general formula wherein "alkoxy" contains 1-8 carbon atoms, and n<SP>1</SP> and m are each 1 or 2, by reacting together the corresponding aldehyde and amine compounds. The chromium azomethine complexes are used as photographic developers.
