Abstract

1312088 Flash heating MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 29 June 1970 [27 June 1969] 31443/70 Heading H2H A heating element 10, particularly for a hot plate, or relatively low resistance has a higher resistance element 11, which may be variable, connected in series which is shuntable by a PTC ferro electric transition resistor 12 so that on initial connection to a supply the PTC resistor has a low value and hence the combination gives a higher heat dissipation, e.g. for cooking food, than at some higher determined temperature when such food is merely to be kept warm. In one example the heating is reducible from 170 watts to 45 watts. The PTC resistor 12 has a sharp knee in its resistance/temperature characteristic examples of which are given in the Specification and may be of semi-conductor ceramic material, e.g. barium titanate. Resistors 10, 11 may be of conventional material i.e. Ni-Cr. The combination may be alternatively secured against the outer part i.e. the side or bottom of a cooking container. The PTC resistor has a value lower than element 10 initially but a higher value than element 11 after transition.
