Abstract
1342833 Toasters ROWENTA-WERKE GmbH 19 April 1971 [13 Feb 1970 13 Aug 1970] 21743/71 Heading A4D [Also in Divisions G1 and H3] A timing device for an electrically heated toaster uses an RC circuit to control the toasting time. The direct voltage supply for the control circuit is tapped from the heating element, through rectifier GL and capacitor C 1 . The time taken for capacitor C 2 to reach the threshold potential of PUT, a programmable unijunction transistor, is controlled by resistors R 8 , R 7 and R 1 . The resistance of R 8 is variable by means of a control knob on the outside of the toaster to vary the toasting time. The threshold potential at PUT is controlled by resistors R 5 and R 6 and the temperature sensing resistor NTC (21). This resistor which has a negative temperature coefficient of resistance is placed in an aperture in the wall of the toasting chamber. Thus if the chamber is hot the threshold potential of PUT is lowered resulting in a shorter toasting time. When the threshold potential of PUT is reached PUT is turned on and the resulting voltage drop at R 2 turns on the thyristor which activates the electromagnet Sp (15) and releases the lock on the bread carrier. The residual charge in C 2 is discharged through R 9 and D 2 . In a modification the thyristor is activated by an integrated circuit which responds to the potential of C 2 . The circuits may be housed in ventilated chambers at the end or on the base of the toaster and may have thermal insulation between them and the toasting chamber.
