Abstract
1311847 Moulding bearings VANDERVELL PRODUCTS Ltd 8 April 1970 [9 April 1969] 18185/69 Heading B5A [Also in Division F2] A bearing has rigid backing member 11, Fig. 1, having a layer 10 of bearing material thereon, the layer 10 comprising a mixture of fibres and polymeric or polymerizable material. In a method of making the bearing, the backing member 11 is positioned in a mould 12 of a press (not shown) and is retained by means of a disc 13. A quantity of the mixture, sufficient to form the layer 10 when a punch 14 is pressed into the mould, is placed into the mould. Heat is then applied to the layer in order to cure it. In another embodiment, a half-bearing having a backing member 21, Fig. 2 (not shown) has a layer formed thereon. In a further embodiment a backing member 31, Fig. 3, is positioned in a mould 32 and is retained by means of a disc 30 and by means of a sleeve 35. A punch 34 is located within the mould and is slidablymounted in the sleeve 35. The material is injected into the mould cavity through a hole in the disc 30 and, after the material has hardened, the bearing is ejected from the mould by means of the sleeve 35, the disc 30 having been previously removed from the mould. The fibres may be carbon, asbestos, glass, P.T.F.E. or metal, may have a length of 0À003 to 0À120 inch may be sized prior to mixing with the polymeric or polymerizable material and may be sized with with a solution of the polymeric of polymerizable material. The latter may be provided with a hardener or curing agent, may be a thermosetting or thermoplastics material, may be an epoxy resin, a phenolic resin, a polyamide or a polyimide resin. The fibres may be mixed with the polymeric or polymerizable material prior to entering the mould, may be placed in the mould before the polymeric or polymerizable material, may be applied to the punch, the polymeric or polymerizable material having been previously inserted in the mould, may be magnetically responsive and maintained in position during moulding by a magnetic field, may be rendered magnetically responsive by coating with iron oxide, Fe 3 O 4 , may be held in position during moulding by an electrostatic field, and may be held normal to the bearing surface.
