Abstract

934,116. Testing flaws. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. May 4, 1962 [May 10, 1961], No. 17101/61. Class 106 (2). Flaws in a surface, particularly a not-easily accessible surface such as narrow blind bores and grooving, of a ferromagnetic workpiece are located and permanently recorded by treating the surface with a suspension in a volatile liquid of magnetic particles, which will tend to collect mostly in flaws, and then applying a moulding material such as molten polyvinyl chloride to which the particles will adhere and which can be separated from the workpiece on hardening. The regions of magnetic particles on the polyvinyl chloride record member, corresponding to flaws in the workpiece, may be marked. In the case of a blind bore, the molten polyvinyl chloride may be poured into the bore and then extracted when hard. In other cases the entire workpiece may be dipped into the molten polyvinyl chloride and the hardened coating later removed in two parts.
