Abstract

1311701 Intrauterine device G D SEARLE& CO 22 June 1970 [25 June 1969] 30127/70 Heading A5R An intrauterine contraceptive device substantially in the shape of the numeral "7" comprises a first transverse arm 120 and a second arm 110 coplanar with said first arm and substantially dependent from one end thereof The device may be made from spring wire coated with a plastics such as polypropylene and may be wound or otherwise coated with fertility reducing metals such as copper and zinc. Insertion is made using an instrument 190 with a handle 23 and a stop 21 located at a distance from the distal end corresponding to the depth to which it is desired to insert barrel 20 into the uterus. The device is folded into the barrel and may be pulled into the uterus through aperture 22 by means of filament 180. The bending of the device may be facilitated by forming coils 170. In a preferred embodiment of the insertion instrument, Fig. 8, there is a second barrel 34 adjacent the first barrel 31 and possessing a slot (35). Bifurcate piston 36 slides within the barrels 31, 34 and has first fork 37 in barrel 31 and second fork 38 in barrel 34. Second fork 38 is provided with a stop 39 external to the barrel 34 that slides within the slot 35. For insertion, the contraceptive device is loaded into barrel 31, pressure is applied to handle 41 to advance the piston 36 until stop 39 makes contact with the cervical oS. The device is now within the uterus but still sheathed within the barrel 31. Further pressure applied to the handle 41 against counterpressure applied to grip 40 causes retraction of the barrel (Figures 13-16, not shown) and ejection of the device into the uterus by the piston 37.
