Abstract

1430316 Sterilization devices RICHARD WOLF GmbH 14 June 1973 [9 Jan 1973] 28442/73 Heading A5R A device for effecting temporary sterilization by binding a Fallopian tube, comprises an elongated barrel 1. an implement 2 at the distal end thereof, operable from the proximal end, the implement 2 consisting of a pair of grips 3, 4, with curved arms 3a, 4a arranged to surround said tube, each grip having a longitudinal passage 5 within which passes a binding element (not shown), the barrel 1 being dimensioned to permit insertion through a cannula, the arms 3a, 4a being normally closed, and each forming an approximate semi-circle, from which the grips extend to lie parallel to each other within barrel 1. The binding element is drawn through passage 5 from the proximal end of tubular grips 3, 4, and through the closed arms 3a, 4a, and terminates back at the proximal end of grips 3 and 4. The arms 3a and 4a may rest flat against one another or may partly imterengage, and are preset to exert an outwardly directed pressure. Barrel 1 bears against the sloping faces on arms 3a, 4a, so that movement of barrel 1 away from the arms permits the grips to open, and movement in the opposite direction causes them to close, the grips 3, 4, being fixed in tube 7 which slides coaxially in barrel 1. Spring handle 8 connected between barrel 1 and tube 7 holds the grips normally shut but controls their opening from the proximal end. A Fallopian tube is surrounded by the grips and a thread is drawn through passage 5 by a probe, via tube 3, arms 3a, 4a and back via tube 4. The device is withdrawn leaving the thread, looped round the Fallopian tube, to be tightened. In a modification the arms 3a, 4a may be dished in crosssection, the concavities facing one another, or facing away from each other. Further, the passage 5 may begin and end in the side of tube 7 rather than at the proximal end. The arms 3a, 4a may not rest fully closed, in which case the thread passage would be interrupted. It is also possible to use a separate binding element in each of the tubes forming passage 5, with a portion of the thread projecting from each arm so that they can be connected by fusion, etc. When the grips are closed, thereby producing a continuous thread.
