1311648 Laying fabrics G STUMPF 30 June 1971 [5 Aug 1970] 30726/71 Heading D1S In a fabric laying machine, lateral deviation of the fabric edges is detected by photoelectric devices 7 which scan the fabric edges and, if necessary, actuate a gear motor 12 to shift a rod 18 carrying a fabric roll 4 to automatically re-align the edges. A fabric laying carriage 1 is driven by a gear motor 2 to reciprocate over a table 3 and layer fabric 5 from a roll 4 in a stack 10, a fabric feed roller 8 and a cutter 9 being provided. The devices 7 are located between guide rollers 6, 6'. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, the rod 18 is carried in fork-shaped recesses, coated with low-friction material, in carriers 15, 16. A collar 17 on the rod 18 engages in a non- rotatable nut 20 which is movable along a threaded spindle 19 by the motor 12 in accordance with signals sent from the devices 7 so as to shift the rod 18. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, the driven shaft of the motor 12 has an internal thread engaged by a threaded spindle 22 which is coupled to the rod 18 by a collet 23 so that the roll 4 may rotate freely but is movable axially for edge-alignment. Rotation of the spindle 22 is prevented by a pin 24 engaging in a groove 25 in the carrier 15. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4, the rod 18 is carried in recesses 31 in carriers 26, 27 mounted on pivots 28 and connected by a rod 32.
