Abstract

668,205. Photo-electric control systems. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Aug. 26, 1949 [Sept. 25, 1948], No. 22224/49. Class 40 (iii). [Also in Group XXXV] A scanning device for use with a photoelectric system for controlling the position of a movable web material 1, such as paper or textile, having a longitudinally printed black line 6 thereon, comprises a mirror 29 attached to the oscillating armature 28 of an electromagnet 22, causing the light from a source 30 to produce an impulse in a photo-cell 31 each time the light beam traverses the line 6. In the embodiment shown, the amplified impulse is fed to the grids of two thyratron valves 12, 13 whose anodes are fed with synchronous A.C. so that with proper registration of the material 1 on its rollers 3, 4, 5, the impulses coincide with zero anode voltages, and the valves 12, 13 remain non-conductive, but when the web deviates, the impulse moves relative to the anode voltages and causes one valve 12 or 13 to become conductive for part of a half-cycle, producing current in one of the two opposed field windings 9 or 10, and motor 8 will drive shaft 7 to produce re-registration of the material 1. The electromagnet 22 of the scanning device comprises two coils 23, 24, each energized in alternate half-cycles from the motor circuit A.C. supply 25 by rectifiers 26, 27, so that the spring-loaded armature 28 is attracted to each pole alternately, causing the mirror 29 to reflect the light beam from one side of line 6 to the other in each half-cycle.
