Abstract

1311466 Vertical spindle lathes ALFRED HERBERT Ltd 20 March 1970 [23 Dec 1968] 60993/68 Heading B3T In a vertical spindle lathe for use with interchangeable workholding devices means is provided for preventing the ingress of swarf or other foreign matter from entering the spindle during the changing of workpiece holding device. The means includes a fixed cover 14 which has an opening 15 with an upwardly directed collar 15a situated directly over the spindle 10, the collar engaging an undercut (not shown) in a chuck 12 when located on the spindle 10. A further cover 17, is also provided which is movable to cover the spindle when the chuck is removed from the spindle. In the embodiment described the movable cover is in the form of a semi-cone carried by a circular rim 18, the moving of the cover is effected by a gear 21 which engages teeth 20 on the rim, the gear being rotatably mounted on a bracket 22 fixed to the cover 14, and being driven by an hydraulic motor 23 also carried on the bracket 22. In alternative arrangements the movable cover may be a horizontal disc rotatable about a vertical axis or a rectilinear movable member actuated by a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder.
