Abstract
1311309 Work positioning saddle COMBUSTION ENG Inc 14 Dec 1970 [19 Dec 1969 59241/70 Heading B3B An hydraulic work positioning saddle 12 comprises a base frame 24, a ram 62 slidably mounted on a fixed piston 54, Fig. 6, the piston and ram defining a chamber 84, and a wedge 110 which co-operates with a ring 112 so that movement of the wedge and consequent movement of the ring controls the flow of fluid to chamber 84 and thus the movement of ram 62 upwardly or downwardly. The 'edge is driven by reversible electric motor 108 via a lead screw 124 and a captive nut 122. As shown in Fig. 2 saddles can be arranged in pairs with tie bars 26 adjustably connecting them together. Fig. 1 shows four saddles used to support and position a vessel 10. Each saddle has switch means associated with the wedge and the ram so that movement of the rams can be stopped when the limit of movement of the parts is reached. Also the switch means can denote through electrical circuitry the direction of movement of the ram and whether it is above or below a median position. Apparatus controls are associated with a console 16 and a pendant 18. Vessel 10 has spiders 20 containing cross hairs positioned therein. An operator has an optical alignment instrument 22 which is in alignment with a reference point with which it is desired to align the vessel axis. The required direction of movement of each jack for alignment in say the horizontal plane is determined by the operator and set as such on the console 16. Operation of a forward drive button on the pendant produces the necessary movement of the rams and when the vessel axis is suitably aligned the button is released. If the rams are moved too far a reverse button can be used to reverse the movement of the rams. When the vessel is correctly aligned the rams are let down so that they rest on ring 112 and wedge 110. This downward movement is slight and is not sufficient to affect the vessels alignment. For maintenance operations each ram can be moved upwardly without operation of the wedge.
