Abstract
An airfoil holding device has jaws pivoted to accommodate the tapered cross section. They may also be pivoted to accommodate spanwise taper and a safety strap may be provided to prevent the airfoil slipping between the jaws. The support legs may fold for flat storage.
Description
2354962 DESIGN FOR AIRFOIL HOLDING DEVICE.
This invention relates to the safe holding and protection of airfoil sections such as aircraft ailerons, elevators, rudders and wings etc. and any tapered units of similar shape.
It is the object of this invention to provide a safe holding fixture for said airfoil or similar sections to enable these items to be held at a convenient height and angle for repairs and servicing to be carried out and to facilitate the safe transportation and storage of such items and also provide space saving in hangars and workshops by being constructed of lightweight tubular steel in such a manner that they may be folded when not in use.
Generally two airfoil holding devices are required to hold average control surfaces although more may be used for larger sections.
The version depicted is the smallest of the intended versions.
C.A.PUGH 189A TOPSHAM ROAD EXETER..EX2 6AN The two tubular frames 10 hinge at Pivot B' with drilled lugs to allow the frames to fold flat for storage. Passing through the centre, of the top brackets 6 and the main tubular frame assembly 10 is a spindle bolt to facilitate the automatic adjustment of the contacting faces of the Pad Assembly 12. This arrangement may be enhanced by the addition of a longer spindle bolt fitted with handwheels to increase the It will be seen that the combination of the rotating action of the Top Bracket Assembly 6 and the hinging of Pad Assembly 12 together will automatically position the contacting faces to fit any tapering section both spanwise, and chordwise-An elasticated Safety Strap 20 is fitted to the top edges of the Pad Assemblies 12 and is allowed to hang loosely in place to prevent accidental damage occurring to airfoil surfaces in the event of accidental slippage of a control surface. With reference to layout Drawing 4 \ 5, Arrows 'C' indicate the movement used to locate and hold any chordal taper through Pivot'A'whilst the Arrows Vindicate the movement to self adjust to suit all spanwise tapers by automatically moving Top Brackets 6 independently of each other through a spindle bolt shown on Drawing 4 \ 5 as Pivot'B'.

Claims (6)
- I.An airfoil section holding device whereby any airfoil section or similar shaped item may be located and firmly held and where the contacting parts of the device adjust automatically to suit the tapered shape of the airfoil.
- 2. An airfoil holding device where according to claim I any aircraft control surface including those with outer skins constructed in the corrugated manner may be located and firmly held.
- 3. An airfoil holding device according to the preceding claims to self adjust to suit any chordwise taper on any airfoil section or aircraft control surface including those manufactured in the corrugated manner
- 4. An airfoil holding device according to the preceding claims to self adjust to suit any spanwise taper on any airfoil section or aircraft control surface including those manufactured in the corrugated manner.
- 5. An airfoil holding device according to the preceding claims in which an airfoil section or aircraft control surface including those manufactured in the corrugated manner may be rotated to a suitable angle for working by the provision of a self adjustment mechanism for the contacting parts.
- 6. An airfoil holding device according to all the preceding claims which will fold flat for storage when not in use.C.A.PUGH 189A TOPSHAM ROAD EXETER EX2 6AN.
