Abstract

1310245 Device for blood coagulation tests MICROMEDIC SYSTEMS Inc 19 March 1970 [19 March 1969] 13251/70 Heading B1X [Also in Division B8] A device for use in blood coagulation tests comprises (Fig. 1) a tubular test chamber divided into two compartments by a rupturable membrane 2d, one compartment (below the membrane as shown) containing an aqueous solution containing calcium ions and the other compartment containing a suspension of a blood coagulation factor, for example thromboplastin in a solution of blood anticoagulant, the device being openable as by separation of parts 1 and 2 to permit introduction of sample into the suspension of coagulation factor, and also comprising means for example plunger 3 for rupturing membrane 2d to allow mixing of the sample and test reagents. The embodiment shown in Fig. 1 comprises engageable tubular elements 1, 2 of polyethylene or polypropylene, the internal surfaces of the adjoining parts of elements 1, 2 being ribbed as at 2L, in element 1 a square cross-section rod 3 having a cylindrical recess 3c and secured by a frusto conical portion 3a to a burstable membrane 1d, in element 2 a disc 4 having a protruding peg 4a for engagement with recess 3c, disc 4 being secured to burstable membrane 2d which separates the two compartments and disc 5 force-fitted in position 2e. In use, elements 1 and 2 are separated (with the device inverted) and blood is introduced into portion L2 (Fig. 1) up to the tip of peg 4a. Elements 1 and 2 are reassembled and the device shaken to mix the blood with the anticoagulant solution. The device may then be stored, or the test continued. For the test, the device is heated to 37‹C, then element 2 is fitted over boss 7 (Fig. 5) and pressure applied on plunger 3 by means 8 to move the plunger to break first membrane 1d (Fig. 6 not shown) then membrane 2d (Fig. 7). The coagulation time of the blood is then measured. The device may be used in conjunction with the apparatus of Specification 1310246. In an alternative embodiment, plunger 3 is kept stationary and the device moved upwardly against the plunger by means of mandrel 10 (Figs. 8-10 not shown). Mandrel 10 is rotated and pin 81 kept stationary in measuring the coagulation time.
