Abstract

1309711 Automatic control of speed CHANDLER EVANS Inc 19 May 1971 [21 May 1970] 15870/71 Heading G3R The cyclic output of a tachometer connected to a combustion engine is fed to a circuit 10 producing an output pulse train having pulse width commensurate with the actual instantaneous speed of a rotating member of the engine. The pulse train enables an AND-gate 12 to pass a train of high frequency pulses from a clock source 14 to a digital counter 16 for a period inversely proportional to the actual speed of the engine. The counter is interrogated by a logic circuit 18 comprising decision gates which are enabled at binary numbers corresponding to specific speeds. The actual speed of the engine is thereby classified into three states above, below or within a predetermined deadband. Depending on the classification, a 'down' trim gate 20, or an 'up' trip gate 22 is enabled to pass a drive signal from a circuit 24 to an electromechanical control mechanism not shown, such as solenoids moving a fuel flow regulator. The circuit 10 comprises a filter, to remove noise, a squaring circuit for shaping the signal to a square wave and a bi-stable circuit responsive to the trailing edge of the square wave to generate a true 50% duty cycle. The output of the circuit 10 is modified to reset counter 16 and transfer the classified information to the trim gates. The clock source comprises a crystal oscillator and the clock frequency may be varied by selection from a plurality of oscillators or the adjustment of a variable frequency oscillator.
