Abstract

1309420 Automatic control of vehicles BURO PATENT AG 24 Sept 1970 [24 Sept 1969] 45616/70 Heading G3R A carriage for a rail-less transport system is steered along a track by devices which respond to deviations from the course and adjust the relative speeds of left-hand and right-hand driving wheels. Fig. 2 shows the underside of a goods vehicle which is normally moved in the direction shown by traction wheels 6a, 6b driven at the same speeds by electric motors 20a, 20b respectively. A desired course may be determined by a magnetic, inductive or optical strip (not shown) set in the road surface to influence detectors 22, 23, 24 at the front of the vehicle. The strip is approximately half the width of the spacing between detectors 23, 24 which are on each side of the strip as the vehicle travels along. On deviation from course, movement of the detectors relative to the strip varies the frequencies of oscillators the outputs of which operate relays through filters to de-energize or brake the appropriate motor to turn the vehicle back on to course. Both motors are stopped if the vehicle is thrown completely off course. Two trailing non-driven wheels 5a, 5b are arranged to swivel and a bar 11 operates switches 12a, 12b to stop the motors if the vehicle meets an obstruction. Alternatively, obstructions may be detected by echo sounding. A further set of detectors may be mounted at the rear of the vehicle to control backward travel. Magnetically operated switches 30-35 respond to permanent magnets suitably positioned in the road near V-junctions in the strip so that one or other motor is de-energized or braked by short circuit if it is necessary for the vehicle to turn to follow a route pre-set on a control panel (not shown) on the vehicle. In a modification, the traction wheels are near the centre of the vehicle with a trailing wheel at the front and rear. In this arrangement a continuously operating motor is coupled to one or other or both traction wheels by control of electromagnetically operated clutches and brakes or a differential gear. The Specification also refers to (a) other detector arrangements which increase the speed of one motor to turn the vehicle (b) various systems of coding to select a route to be followed or a floor to be attained (c) capacitive, inductive or optical elements instead of permanent magnets (d) interruption of the strip at the junctions.
