Abstract
1309266 Refining aluminium and aluminium alloys ALLOYS & CHEMICALS CORP 11 March 1970 [21 March 1969] 11641/70 Heading C7D Impurities are removed from molten aluminium or aluminium alloy by covering the metal with a molten layer of flux containing as a major component at least one alkali metal chloride, alkali metal fluoride, alkaline earth metal chloride or fluoride and also containing at least part of the quantity of a chloridizing agent necessary to react with the impurities. The chloridizing agent is an agent containing a reactive chlorine-containing compound capable of effecting chlorination, such as aluminium chloride or a double salt thereof. The flux layer is of sufficient depth and fluidity to absorb the major part of any aluminium chloride formed during chlorination without formation of fume and control of impurity removal is effected by control of the content of the agent in the flux. The agent may be formed by introducing a reactive chlorine vapour into molten aluminium and then discontinuing the supply of vapour while allowing the reaction between the flux and metal to continue. The treatment of aluminium containing hydrogen magnesium, or sodium as an impurity is referred to.
