Abstract

1403893 Aluminium production ALUMINUM CO OF AMERICA 12 Sept 1972 [26 Oct 1971] 42341/72 HeadingC7B In the production of aluminium by electrolysis of aluminium chloride in a fused solvent, the metal oxide content of the bath is controlled so that it does not exceed 0.25 wt per cent and is preferably less than 0.05 wt per cent oxygen. The oxygen concentration of aluminium chloride fed into the bath to replace that lost by electrolysis may be less than 0.25 wt per cent oxygen. Control of oxygen content may be by dissolving the oxide by adding a fluoride or by lowering the temperature then electrolyzing the dissolved oxide. The fluoride may be cryolyte, magnesium, aluminium, sodium, or calcium fluorides. The oxide may also be removed by lowering the cement density or by filtration.
