Abstract

1309198 Terminals AMP Inc 8 Nov 1971 [25 Nov 1970] 51764/71 Heading H2E A terminal comprises a connector part 2 for connection to a wire, a contact part 3 for releasable connection to a conductive post and a cantilever spring 11 joined to a channel portion 12 of the contact part which has a base wall 50 and side walls 52 folded over to form a platform 56, the spring 11 extending forwardly over the platform and across the forward end 53 of the channel and having an aperture 16 which is in non-alignment with the forward end when the spring 11 is in a relaxed condition, so that in use when a post (19) is passed through the aperture 16 and into the channel the spring is flexed to align the aperture with the forward end 53 and bias the post against the platform 56 and cause an edge 22 of the aperture to bite into the surface of the post. The connector part is formed with two pairs of arms 4, 41 and 6, 6<SP>1</SP> for crimping to the core and insulation of a wire (18), while the channel portion has arms 13 with slots 60 which are folded over to engage ears 61 on a locking part 11a of the spring. The spring has a central bowed part 11b and a latching part 11c with the aperture 16, the spring being dished between the forward free end of the spring and the edge 22 of the aperture to enhance the biting. The parts 2, 3 are laterally offset from each other as shown and linked by a transition part 14, although in another embodiment (Figs. 8, 9, not shown) they are offset in the opposite direction with the transition part extending from the contact part laterally on the same side as the spring, there being a hole (29) in the transition part aligned with the channel part so that a post can extend completely through the channel. In the preferred embodiment the spring is of stainless steel which has a coefficient of thermal expansion less than phosphor bronze from which the rest of the terminal is made. As a result the channel expands relative to the spring during Joule healing to increase the bias of the spring and enhance contact. A tool (Figs. 5 to 7, not shown) for releasing the spring from a post comprises a channel part 8 with hooks (26) for engaging the free end of the spring and a sprung plunger for engaging the connection part to arch the spring clear of the post and release the pressure between the post and the contact part 3.
