Abstract

1308891 Self sustaining winches JOHN SMITH & CO (ENG) Ltd 9 Aug 1971 [1 Jan 1971] 53/71 Heading B8B [Also in Division F2] A self sustaining winch comprises a winch drum 7 drivingly associated with an external gear 6 in mesh with a fixed internal gear 2, the external gear 6 being rotatably mounted on an eccentric 5 rotatable with a shaft 4 coaxial with the internal gear 2, whereby rotation of the shaft 4 causes the external gear 6 to drive itself around the internal gear 2 and rotate the drum 7 in the opposite direction to that of the shaft 4. Recesses 8 in the drum 7 drivingly receive pins 9 protruding from the external gear 6 and the relationship between the speeds of the shaft 4 and drum 7 corresponds to the ratio of the number of teeth on the gears 2 and 6. The shaft 4 which may be manually or power driven is supported at its free end in a bearing 13 in a drum case 10 having a winch cable opening 14. With this arrangement of gears, the shaft 4 cannot be driven in reverse due to tension in the cable applying a torque to the drum. (For Figure see next page.)
