Abstract

1308817 A cage rack NUTRITIONAL RESEARCH UNIT Ltd 25 Jan 1972 [7 Nov 1970] 53064/70 Heading AIM A cabinet 1, open only at the front, has an air filter-fan system 11 mounted on its top, feeding clean air into a plenum chamber 4 at the rear of the cabinet from which the air emerges via slits in the back of the cabinet and passes over the tops of animal cages supported by shelves 6, so that each cage is ventilated and the venting air forms an air barrier to protect the cages from exposure to particulate matter in the surrounding environment or from adjacent cages. The cabinet is of moulded fibre glass strengthened by spaced wooden supports 2, fitted with a plurality of slidable shelves, to support the cages, which are reinforced at their front edge by a length of steel tubing 8 and are supported on slides 7 secured to the sides of the cabinet 1. The rear margin of each shelf is supported by a length of angled steel 9 so that no gap exists between the shelves and the vertical panel 3 and therefore preventing interference to the air flow. The fan housing 11 contains an intake fan 12, in front of which is an independent, removable air filter 14 so that clean air is forced downward into the plenum via the slot 5. To overcome turbulence, an air diffuser may be placed inside the plenum chamber so that an equal pressure distribution exists along the vertical back panel of the cabinet 3. Horizontal slits in this back allow the air to pass into the cabinet, over the top of the animal cages before venting at the front end so forming an effective air barrier which prevents the cages from being infected by matter from any other source. The cabinet can be mounted on castors to facilitate mobility of the unit.
