Abstract
1308411 Direct-positive silver halide photographic emulsions. FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [19 March 1970] 24739/71 Heading G2C A direct-positive fogged silver halide photographic emulsion contains at least one dye of the formula I: - wherein X<SP>1</SP>, X<SP>2</SP>, X<SP>3</SP>, X<SP>4</SP> and X<SP>5</SP> each represent halogen; p, q, r and s each represent 0 or 1; t is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4; when p, q, r, s or t is 0, X<SP>1</SP>, X<SP>2</SP>, X<SP>3</SP>, X<SP>4</SP> or X<SP>5</SP> respectively is H; and B is H, alkali metal atom, NH 4 or an alkaline earth metal; together with at least one compound of the formula II:- wherein Y is CH or N; R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> each represent H, OH, alkoxyl, aryloxyl, halogen, hetercyclic nucleus, alkylthio, heterocyclylthio. arylthio, amino, substituted or unsubstituted alkylamino, cyclohexylamino, substituted or unsubstituted arylamino, heterocyclylamino, aryl or mercapto and A is A<SP>1</SP> or A<SP>2</SP>, A<SP>1</SP> being wherein M is H or a cation giving water-solubility to the compound; and A<SP>2</SP> is p-diphenylene, p-phenylene, m-phenylene, diphenyl ether -4, 4<SP>1</SP>-ylene, diphenyl methane -4, 4<SP>1</SP>-ylene or 1, 5- naphthylene, and when A is A<SP>2</SP>, at least one of R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R and R<SP>4</SP> is a substituent containing -SO 3 M wherein M is as defined above. Many examples are given of both compounds. Preferably 1-200mg of the dye of formula I are used per kg of the silver halide emulsion, and preferably 5-2000mg of the compound of formula II per kg of the silver halide emulsion. The ratio of the compound of the formula I to that of formula II is preferably 1:5 to 1:50 by weight. These emulsions are highly sensitive, can maintain a definite maximum density and a high contrast, do not suffer from re-reversion (the phenomenon that after the density of the characteristic curve decreases, the density increases again) and have a low minimum density.
