Abstract

1308052 Stair coverings R LANGRIDGE 19 April 1971 [27 Nov 1969 8 April 1970] 58072/69 Heading A4S [Also in Division E1] The front edge of a stair carpet piece 11 extends over and is bonded to the flange 6 of a steel support 1, secured by screws 4 to the front edge of a tread 3, and the rear edge is secured to the rear of the tread by screws 12 and concealed by a wooden baton 9 secured by screws 10 to a backing plate 2 screwed to the riser 7. The backing plate is apertured for passage of the fixing screws, which are concealed by strips (not shown) bonded to the plate, and may be decorated by covering with a plastic sheet, a veneer or a mirror. In modifications, a base plate (17) secured to the tread is integral with the backing plate 2, or is integral with the support 1 and has an upturned rear edge (15) which is held between the backing plate and the riser. In further modifications the backing plate is of plastics material and is bonded to the riser, the flange has spikes for securing the front edge of the carpet piece, the baton is replaced by a shaped lower end of the backing plate, or a strip of wear-resistant material, e.g. rubber, is provided adjacent the front edge of the carpet piece which is secured by contact adhesive to the support 1 which has an upward curvature adjacent the flange to accommodate a resilient pad. In a stair without risers the backing plate is secured to the tread.
