Abstract
1307851 Reciprocating pumps or motors R C CLERK 9 June 1970 [11 April 1969 25 April 1969] 18643/69 and 21241/69 Heading F1A. In an axial-piston pump or motor having a rotary cylinder block 4 engaging a stationary ported valve face 2, the valve ports taper in depth from the inlet and outlet passages 1 and 5 and incorporate radial hydrofoils 6. For the inlet port shown, the arrangement increases the liquid flow-rate in the port to match the speed of the cylinder ports 3. At high speeds of the cylinder ports, a return flow is drawn over the back of the hydrofoil and augments the flow into the port, and at low speeds some of the liquid from passage 1 is diverted over the back of the hydrofoil and also passes through slots 7 and 8 in the hydrofoil, and acts to slow down the flow in the port. The hydrofoil may be cast integrally with the casing or may comprise an insert of a different material. The passages and hydrofoil may be coated with lowfriction plastics.
