Abstract
1280447 Rotary positive-displacement pumps FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 4 Dec 1970 [24 Dec 1969] 57675/70 Heading F1F In a double-acting rotary positive displacement pump of the radially outwardly-sliding "slipper" type for a vehicle power-assisted steering system, the pressure fluid output flow to the power steering motor, or servo, (not shown) is by way of a fluid control valve orifice 76 and a pressure control bypass valve 38 carrying a tapered needle valve 90 which on fluid-pressure increase progressively restricts the flow such that the greater the amount of restriction the higher the rate of pressure build-up on the valve 88 side of the orifice 76 to move the valve 88 against a spring 86 restricting the flow from the outlet chamber 70 through the orifice 76 to the net output flow to a passage 78, connected to the pump outlet conduit, at a value determined by the calibration of the needle valve 90, the outlet pressure in passage 78 being determined by the spring 86 because of the action of a second orifice 80 whereby if this pressure exceeds a predetermined value a balancing pressure via the orifice 80 and a cross-over duct 82 unseats a spring-loaded ball valve 92 to by-pass pressure fluid to a chamber 94, surrounding the valve 88, the chamber 94 communicating with a nozzle 96 whereby the by-pass flow is accelerated through an internal feed passage 98 communicating with a reservoir 100 whereby fluid is drawn from the reservoir by the aspirator action developed by the accelerated fluid in the feed passage 98 which supercharges the fluid in an annular inlet port chamber 64, the supercharging action additionally serving to prevent pump cavitation. The rotor 36 of the pump is fast on an engine driven shaft 20 and carries a number of spring-loaded slippers 48 arranged in pockets 50 of the rotor and engaging an elliptic cam track of a fixed cam plate which forms two arcuate working spaces 44, 46 defining the pumping chamber between end-plates 16, 26, diametrically oppositely arranged inlet and outlet ports 60, 62 and 54, 56 being formed in the adjacent pump casing 10 semi-isolated from the pump rotor 36.
