Abstract
1307661 Treatment of TiO 2 PIGMENTCHEMIE GmbH 18 Jan 1971 [22 Jan 1970] 2429/71 Heading C1N A TiO 2 pigment which has been calcined with up to 5 wt. per cent ZnO is treated in acid medium to precipitate a coating of Al 2 O 3 SiO 2 , Sb 2 O 5 or TiO 2 on the pigment, filtered and washed, the treatment being such that less than 0À1 wt. per cent of acid-soluble ZnO remains in the TiO 2 . A suspension of the calcined TiO 2 may initially be made alkaline with NaOH or Na silicate, and the pH then adjusted to below 5, preferably 1-2, with acidic salt solutions, e.g. Al sulphate, titanyl sulphate or chloride, or SbCl 5 . The oxides are precipitated by adjusting the pH to 3À8-6, e.g. with Na aluminate, and further pH adjustment may be made with NaOH or HCl. The pigment is then filtered and may be washed with water, NH 4 OH, and water again, and finally dried at 130‹ or 150‹ C. and jet milled.
