Abstract

1307371 Optical comparison device I WILLIAMS F A WILLIAMSON and I H HITCHINSON 21 May 1970 [31 May 1969] 27705/69 Heading G2J A binocular viewing device for comparing supposedly identical articles X, Y placed sideby-side, whereby they are seen as a single superimposed image, incorporates a circular rotary shutter 30 which alternately obscures the view through each viewing aperture 22, 23 of the device. Images of the articles X, Y reach the eyes R, L of a viewer by way of planar reflectors 26, 24 and 27, 25. The shutter 30 is mounted on the shaft 32 of a variable speed electric motor 33 and incorporates three uniformly spaced apertures 31 of such size and arrangement that appropriate positioning of the shutter 30 affords a simultaneous view through the viewing apertures for accurate location of the articles on base 10. When the articles are correctly positioned they are viewed through 22 and 23 as a composite image, rotation of the shutter causing any differences between X and Y to give rise to a "blinking" effect at the frequency of rotation of the shutter; the speed of the shutter can be prearranged so that the "blink" is outstandingly noticeable to the particular user of the device. The shutter arrangement may be replaced by an intermittent light source or sources. In an alternative embodiment Fig.4, (not shown), the device is made in spectacle form with a nose piece (40 and sidearms (41). In this case there is provided a pivotal shutter (43) which is rocked by a spring powered motor (45) and which has side pieces (43a, 43b) which can be interposed between the reflector pairs 26, 24 and 27, 25.
