Abstract

1307364 Optical Bench EALING BECK Ltd and C H ROBERTS 29 May 1970 [9 June 1969] 29111/69 Heading G2J An optical bench comprises an elongated bench member 10 forming a slide, two saddles 11 and 12, (not shown), for supporting optical components and slidable along the bench member 10, and a rack 14 slidably extending along the bench; each saddle incorporates a pinion 15 for engaging the rack 14 and clamping bolts 19, 20 for locking the saddle to the rack 14 and to the bench member 10 respectively. Pinion 15 is manually rotated via a knob 17 and a spindle 16 grooved at 18 to receive bolt 19. Grooves 21, 22 are cut in the sides of the bench: one receives bolt 20, and a scale 23 is provided on the other (the saddles may be mounted the other way round). When the saddles have been approximately positioned, one (11) is locked to the bench member 10 by its bolt 20 and the other (12) is locked to the rack 14 by its bolt 19; rotation of the pinion knob 17 of saddle 11 then effects movement of the rack 14 and thus of the saddle (12) clamped thereto, so that a fine adjustment of the position of saddle (12) relative to that of saddle 11 is made by "remote control". More than two such saddles may be provided if required, and the bench member 10 may have any convenient cross-section (e.g. triangular and grooved as shown, or rectangular with a projecting dovetail on the upper side).
