Abstract

1307297 Strap wrenches INVENTIONS & DESIGN AGENCY Ltd 6 May 1971 [13 May 1970 23180/70 Heading B3N A tool for applying torque to an object such as a screw cup comprises a handle having a flexible strap 10, the strap being gripped upon the composition of torque the handle having a high friction surface to press the strap against an object when torque is applied and means to cause automatic frictional engagement of the strap upon the imposition of torque to prevent enlargement of the loop. In Fig. 1 strap 10 is held at 19 and movably forced at its other end to a slide member 6 which is manually adjustable. In operation slide 6 is used to tighten the strap about a screw cap and then the handle is moved anti-clockwise so that it pivots about the corner of the wedge which causes wedge 11 to move inwardly and grip the strap. In a modification, Fig. 4, not shown, the slide 6 is replaced by a roller biased by a coil spring. The strap may be any suitable construction and may have ribs formed thereon to grip in a complementary recess in a nut or bolt. Fig. 5 shows another embodiment where the strap is fixed between abutments 56, 57, 58 and the other end is gripped between surfaces 59 and 60. Fig. 6 shows an embodiment where the strap is fixed to cam member 61, which cam also grips the strap against the inside of hollow portion 50 when stem 51 is moved anti-clockwise. Fig. 8 shows a further embodiment made of a synthetic plastics material with the free end of strap 10 being held in operation of abutment 86 by pivotal movement of portion 90.
