Application September 26, 1934, Serial No. 745,500
1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in cover wrenches, being particularly directed to a device applicable for loosening and tightening screw type or friction covers for jars.
Broadly, it is an object of this invention to provide a cover wrench incorporating a plurality of jaws, one fixed and one movable, adapted to peripherally engage a cover of the screw or friction type to loosen or tighten the same with respect to the jar on which it is disposed, the movable jaw being reciprocable with respect to the fixed jaw through the longitudinal movement of the wrench handle upon rotation of the latter.
Specifically, it is an object of this invention to provide for a cover wrench incorporating fixed and movable jaws, the said movable jaw being reciprocable along a guide through the actuation of the rotatable handle, such handle or a part thereof being interiorly threaded to cooperate with threads on a jaw support, whereby upon rotation the handle simultaneously is longitudinally displaced.
These and other advantages, capabilities and features of the invention will appear from the subjoined detailed description of one specific embodiment thereof, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section showing the wrench.
Figure 2 is a plan view partly in section of the device.
Figure 3 is an end view in section taken along lines 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a side elevation partly in section of a modified form of device.
Referring to the reference characters in the drawing, numeral I0 represents the wrench shank rectangular in cross-section, as shown in Figure 3, and having mounted at one end thereof a fixed gripping jaw l I, said jaw comprising a body portion l2, through which pass fastening means I3, for attaching the gripping jaw to the shank I0 and having a plurality of Wings 14 and I4 extending therefrom, such wings having serrated gripping portions I5. As shown in Figures 1 and 2 the gripping jaw H is so formed as to provide for an offset of the wings I4 and M with respect to the body l 2, thereby to provide for disposal at a considerable depth of the gripping members with respect to the top of the cover to be acted on.
The shank is threaded from a point distant to the end thereof carrying the fixed gripper jaw to its other end, as at is, and on the shank there is disposed movable jaw I! having a body portion l8 and offset wing portions I 9 and I 9 similar in formation and relation with respect to the body l8 as are the wings M and M with respect to the body I2, the wings of the movable gripper jaw being oppositely directed to those on the fixed jaw. Integral with body 18 of the movable gripper jaw H is formed guide 20, the construction of which is that of a substantial right angle as indicated in Figure 3, the respective interior peripheral surface of which is disposed adjacent the peripheral surface of the threaded portion l6 of the shank l0, there being provided a slidable fit between the guide and the shank. Cooperating with the threaded free end of the shank [0 there is provided a handle 2!, the interior of which is grooved to provide a thread 22 circular in formation, such thread being of the same pitch as the thread on the shank, whereby rotation of the handle with respect to the shank will cause a reciprocation of the handle with respect to the shank, the open end of the handle as at 23 having formed therein a bearing surface adapted to contact with the end 24 of the guide member 20, thereby to cause a longitudinal reciprocation of the guide member carrying the movable gripping jaw with respect to the shank upon rotation of the handle.
It should be noted in the form shown in Figures 1 to 3, that the movable jaw incorporating the guide 20 is freely slidable on the shank l0 and can be displaced along the shank at the threaded or non-threaded portions thereof by mere physical manipulation, independent of the actuation of the handle. This feature is provided so that when covers of various sizes are involved, as is commonly found in household operations, the movable gripping jaw may be rapidly displaced along the shank so as to form a temporary grip, after which the handle is rotated about the shank to cause upon the handles longitudinal movement the contact of the bearing at the open end thereof with the end of the guide on the gripper member, thereby to transmit displacement and pressure upon further actuation of the handle to firmly lock the movable gripper jaw in conjunction with the fixed gripper jaw to a cover. It should be noted in this modification, that the handle may displace the movable gripper jaw towards the fixed gripper jaw upon actuation thereof, but that the movable gripper jaw is not returned or directed away from the fixed gripper jaw by rotation of the handle in a direction opposite to its locking movement.
To provide for a displacement of the movable gripper jaw in both directions with respect to the fixed gripper jaw, there is shown in Figure 4 a modification incorporating a lug or projection 25 depending from the movable jaw carrying a pin 26 angularly disposed with respect thereto, which pin is adapted to ride in groove 21 formed on the inner periphery of handle 23 adjacent the open end thereof. Through the provision of this locking mechanism the movable gripping jaw is directly interlocked with the handle, thereby to provide for reciprocation of the movable gripping jaw with respect to the fixed gripping jaw upon relative displacement in opposite directions of the handle, upon rotation of the same with respect to the shank. 7
It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made to the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
I claim: In a device of the class described, a shank, a
gripping member fixed at one end thereof, a movable gripping member slidable along said shank, threads formed on the free end of said shank, a hollow handle interiorly threaded to cooperate with the threads of said shank, whereby rotation of said handle with respect to said shank causes longitudinal reciprocation of said handle, a movable gripping member slidable along said shank and disposed between the fixed gripping member and said handle, guide means integral with said movable gripping member, and forming a sleeve with respect to said shank, means for interlocking said movable gripping member with said handle, whereby reciprocation of said handle upon rotation thereof with respect to the shank produces reciprocation of the movable gripping member with respect to the fixed gripping memher, said means comprising a projection extending from said movable gripping member disposed in a peripheral groove formed interiorly of said handle.
