Abstract

130,678. Eickhoff, T. H., and Payne, O. V. March 12, 1918. Machine guns; ordnance breech mechanism.- Relates to automatic guns of the kind described in Specification 14368/14, in which the breech block engages locking-surfaces inclined at such an angle that the breech remains locked under the high pressure immediately following the discharge, but opens when the pressure has fallen. According to the invention a transversely-sliding locking- member is mounted on the breech-block and is provided with inclined locking-lugs engaging the breech-body, the inclination of the lugs relative to the axis of the gun being less than the inclination of the bearing surfaces between the breechblock and the locking-member, so that backward pressure on the breech-block tends to unlock the locking-member except in the case of very high pressures. In the construction shown, a U. shaped locking member L slides in inclined grooves at the sides of the breech-block B, and has inclined locking lugs 10 adapted to engage recesses 11, Fig. 2, in the breech' body 5. The breech-block is moved forward and the locking member raised into the locking position by a single spring 1 and connecting link 2 acting on the locking member in an inclined direction.
