Abstract

1306568 Boring earth &c F K FOX 9 Nov 1971 52042/71 Heading E1F [Also in Division F1] A tool 14 in, and rotatable with, a drill string 10 having passages for drilling mud comprises a member 15, a body 16A rotatable about the member and having a spiral fin 28, and means to rotate the body relative the member in a direction to cause the fin to reduce hydrostatic pressure of the drilling mud in the annulus A below the fin. The body has a further fin 29 and is rotated in the direction of the strings rotation by a multi-stage turbine having stator and rotor blades 35, 36 respectively. The rotating body which forces the mud upwardly in the annulus is assisted by a body 16B which is rotated in the opposite direction to reduce the torque effect of the body 16A. A centralizer 32 is fitted in the string.
