Abstract

1281252 Earth drills SUN OIL CO 7 Oct 1970 [24 Oct 1969] 47580/70 Heading E1F An earth drill bit with a rotary toothed cutter has drilling mud directed through the tooth gaps where the teeth are in contact with the earth. The bit is preferably a roller bit, and the drilling mud flows through passages 26 and down a groove 34 in the external surface of the bit body. This is stated to centralize the bit, where there are, for example, three rollers, because any eccentricity results in a local variation in pressure in the groove 34 and hence in the annulus surrounding the drill.
