Abstract

1342944 Boring earth &c TONE BORING CO Ltd 15 Nov 1971 [13 May 1971] 52860/71 Heading E1F Boring apparatus comprises a shaft 10 attached to a drill pipe 2, a gear 11 on the shaft, a gear 12 meshing with the gear 11 and carrying a cutter 14, and a carrier 15 rotatable about the shaft and rotatably supporting the gear 11 and cutter. The shaft 13 of the cutter may be inclined so that its leading edge penetrates deeper into the hole bottom than does its trailing edge. The carrier constitutes an oil filled casing for the gears, a diaphragm or piston in the casing wall ensuring that the oil and the fluid in the borehole are maintained at the same pressures. The upper end of the casing may carry circumferential cutters and one element of a dog clutch which engages a clutch element fixed to the shaft, the casing being revolved to ream the borehole on withdrawal of the apparatus. The further cutters may be carried by the shaft.
