Abstract
1306333 Processing nuts A M OLUSANYA 14 June 1971 27783/71 Heading A2Q Awusa-nuts (Tetracarpidium conophorum) are processed to produce flaked and powdered edible products. In a processing plant the nuts are first washed in a washer 6 and then passed to a decorticating machine 8 from which the shell material is collected in a trough 10. The decorticated nuts are taken by bucket elevator 14 to a peeler-washer 18 where the brown skin membrane is peeled off and the nut meats washed, after which they are transferred to a gas-fired cooker 26 where they are cooked in brine at 150‹F to remove bitter taste. A bucket elevator 28 conveys the cooked nut meats to a machine 30 which slices the meats into pieces 0.065 inch thick which are then taken by belt conveyer 32, storage bin 34, and belt conveyer 36 to a roaster-cooler 38, 37 incorporating a colour control device 39. A belt conveyer 40 transfers the roasted and cooled slices to a storage bin 42 which discharges to a packaging machine 44 for flakes and, by way of a belt conveyer 46, to a pulverizer 48 producing a powdered product which is conveyed by pipe 50 to a dust collector 52 feeding a powder packaging machine 54.
