1305788 Bookbinding ABILDGAARD LABORATORIES Inc 12 Feb 1970 [13 Feb 1969 29 Oct 1969] 6831/70 Heading B6A Books may be bound by means of two strips 56, 62, Figs. 13, 14, one 56 of which carries equally-spaced pins 59 which are inserted through corresponding-spaced apertures in the sheets 60 of the book, and the other 62 of which has apertures to receive the pins, the ends of the pins being subsequently sheared off if necessary, and secured to the strip 62 by forming heads 67 thereon by pressure or heating. Apertured cover sheets may be placed on the top and bottom of the stack of sheets. The holes in the strip 62 may be countersunk to receive the pin heads. Each strip may have pins thereon (Fig. 4) engaging apertures in the other strip. In Fig. 14, each strip has a flange 58, 64 extending over the back of the sheets 60. A strip 68 of foam-type pressure-sensitive tape may be positioned between the flanges and adhered to the sheet edges, and a second strip 69 of such tape may be applied over the first strip between extensions 57, 63 of the binding strips 56, 62. The spine of the book may be finished off by means of pressure adhesive tape (51, Fig. 12) which adheres to the exposed edges of the sheets and to the edges of the binder strips. The pins may be of a flexible plastics material to allow easy opening of the book (Fig. 3A). Rectangular-sectioned pins may be provided. Instead of binding strips such as 56, 62 which extend the full width of the book, a number of shorter strips 21y, 24y, Fig. 11, spaced apart may be employed (Fig. 10) in which case a channelshaped cap 46 of plastics material may be slid endwise over the end attached by adhesive. A number of binder strips may be assembled parallel to one another and attached to one another by breakable pieces (31, Fig. 5) or by being stuck on a sheet (32, Fig. 6) to form a cartridge of strips for use in a machine carrying out the binding operations. Alternatively binding strips may be assembled end to end, (Figs. 7-9) for the same purpose. Apparatus comprises a table 131 having a ledge 135 on which a strip 21 with pins 22 is mounted, with sheets placed over the pins. A press head 156 which may be swung clear as shown dotted, carries an apertured strip 24 and is movable by handle 151 through a chain drive to place the strip 24 over the pins 22 and compress the belt. The press head also carries shear blades 163 operable by cams to shear the excess length of pins. The pin ends are then deformed to fan heads by a riveting attachment, hot forming or spinning, Figs. 20-22 (not shown).
