Abstract
1306771 Bookbinding ABILDGAARD LABORATORIES Inc 12 Feb 1970 [29 Oct 1969 12 Feb 1970] 5103/71 Divided out of 1305788 Heading B6A Sheets having a line of apertures adjacent to one edge are bound into book form by means of two strips 24b, Fig. 1, having apertures corresponding to those in the sheets, through which are passed thermoplastic rods 22b, the strips and sheets then being compressed and the rods cut to length, and their ends deformed to form heads so as to secure the strips, rods and sheets together. Countersunk holes may be provided in the strips to receive the heads formed on the rods. Apertured covers may be placed on the top and bottom of the stack of sheets. The spine of the book may be finished off by means of a pressure-adhesive tape (51, Fig. 11) which adheres to the exposed edges of the sheets and to the edges of the binder strips. In Fig. 12, each apertured strip 56, 62 has a flange 58, 64 extending over the back of the sheets 60. A strip 68 of foam-type pressure sensitive tape may be positioned between the flanges and adhered to the sheet edges, and a second strip 69 of such tape may be applied over the first strip between extensions 57, 63 of the binding strips 56, 62. Instead of binding strips 24b which extend the full width of the book, a number of shorter strips 24g, Fig. 10, spaced apart may be employed (Fig. 9) in which case a channel-shaped cap 46 of plastics material may be slid endwise over the strips 24g and attached by adhesive. A number of binder strips may be assembled parallel to one another, and attached to one another by breakable pieces (31, Fig. 4) or by being stuck on a sheet (32, Fig. 5) to form a cartridge of strips for use in a machine carrying out the binding operations. Alternatively, binding strips may be assembled end to end.
