A counter-balance 24 is arranged always to balance the arm. A further detector 32 can be positioned to detect and thus allow for background radiation. The backrest is hydraulically operated by ram and piston 33 and the whole bed surface and associated equipment is adjustable vertically by hydraulic means. Suitable electronic computing equipment 40 may be mounted on the trolley. Side members 12 position the patient.
