Abstract
1,152,442. Irradiating bodies. ALDERSON RESEARCH LABORATORIES Inc. 29 April 1966, No. 13726/66. Heading H5R. Radiation dose distributions required for the treatment of malignant tumours are determined by using a plurality of adjustable clamps and marking styluses to enable a patient to be positioned invariantly on a table in a treatment position, making radiographs through a radiography frame containing objects to mark a co-ordinate grid system on the radiographs to permit the tumour &c. to be located precisely within the co-ordinate system, drawing patient contours on charts marked with a corresponding co-ordinate system and transferring the locations of the tumour &c. (as determined from the grid system) on to the patient contour chart. A plaster cast of the patient in the treatment position is then made and transferred to a fixture incorporating a sliced phantom containing a human skeleton and plastics materials with the same radiationinteraction properties as human soft tissues and lungs. Mouldable material is then inserted between the cast and phantom to build up the phantom to match the contours of the patient and the matched phantom is placed on the table. A test treatment is then administered to the phantom and the dose distribution in the phantom is measured for use, after modification if necessary, in the treatment of the actual patient. The patient is returned to the treatment position for the radiation treatment. The treatment table (see Fig. 1) comprises the clamps marking styluses 37 to enable invariant location of the patient on the table, a radiography frame 23 containing spheres and pellets to mark the grids on the radiographs contouring mechanism 22. There is also a means (see Fig. 8, not shown) for registering the plaster cast of the patient with the fixture and sliced phantom for use during matching the phantom to the patient contours.
